Dr Brian Hoare

B.O.T, PhD

Brian is a Senior Paediatric Occupational Therapist at Monash Children’s Hospital, Melbourne with 15 years clinical experience working with children with cerebral palsy. He completed his PhD at LaTrobe University, Melbourne in 2010 which focused on the treatment of young children with unilateral cerebral palsy (hemiplegia). Brian completed a post-doctoral position at Karolinska Institute, Sweden in 2012 and is Managing Director of CPteaching and CPtoys.

[tabgroup] [tab title=”About” id=”t1″]Brian has been a full-time occupational therapist (OT) at Monash Children’s, Southern Health since 2000 where he is currently the senior OT for the Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (VPRS).
While maintaining a full-time clinical caseload, Brian completed his PhD in 2010. In 2011 Brian took leave from his clinical position to undertake a 9-month post-doctoral position at Karolinska Institute, Sweden with Professor Ann-Christin Eliasson and Associate Professor Lena Krumlinde-Sundholm.

Brian’s doctoral research evaluated the effects of upper limb therapy following Botulinum toxin-A in children aged 18 months to 6 years with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Brian’s research findings have been disseminated widely through publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals. These papers, along with two Cochrane reviews, provide the highest-level of evidence supporting upper limb therapy for children with CP. Brian’s work has contributed significantly to establishing clinical best-practice both in Australia and internationally, and established him as an OT expert in the field of paediatric CP. As a clinician, Brian provides family-centered, highly specialised interventions. He has established clinical protocols for therapy following interventions such as Botulinum toxin-A; played a pivotal role in the clinical implementation of modified constraint-induced movement therapy in Australia; and described the theoretical framework and clinical implementation of bimanual occupational therapy. His expertise is evident in publications and his frequent invitations to provide education about upper limb interventions. [/tab] [tab title=”Publications” id=”t2″] Publications: 17
